DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed grave concern over official National Statistical Office data indicating that consumer spending in India contracted for the first time in four decades, pointing to a severe economic downturn. Stalin noted that falling consumption reflects profound financial distress across rural households, where stagnant agricultural incomes, unemployment, and rising costs have drastically curtailed purchasing power. He urged central policymakers to treat these key economic indicators as an urgent wake-up call.
Stalin emphasized that an economic crisis of this magnitude requires immediate governmental intervention focused on bolstering the rural economy rather than relying on superficial policy announcements. When rural families lack sufficient earnings to purchase basic food and household necessities, manufacturing demand collapses, setting off an industrial recession. He called upon the Union Government to inject direct liquidity into rural communities, expand employment guarantees, and implement meaningful debt relief for distressed farming communities.
The DMK leader warned that ignoring empirical findings from official statistical surveys will only exacerbate poverty and inequality across the country. Stalin concluded by urging economic administrators to formulate a transparent, grassroots revival roadmap that revitalizes village economies and restores stability for vulnerable citizens.
