DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded an immediate, unequivocal public explanation from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami regarding contradictory announcements surrounding the mode of election for urban civic chiefs. Stalin highlighted that merely one week earlier, the Chief Minister had explicitly stated in public that mayors of municipal corporations would be elected directly by the people. However, emerging reports from cabinet deliberations directly contradicted this public assurance, indicating a clandestine decision to revert to indirect elections through councilors.

Stalin called upon the Chief Minister to come clean before the public and clarify whether his cabinet indeed passed a resolution to dismantle direct mayoral elections. He remarked that such stark contradictions between a Chief Minister's public declarations and official cabinet actions erode executive credibility and generate widespread confusion among citizens. An administration cannot operate with deceitful double standards on matters concerning democratic franchise and municipal governance.
