DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK government for promulgating an emergency ordinance mandating indirect elections for the posts of municipal corporation mayors, municipality chairpersons, and town panchayat chiefs. Stalin declared that this regressive move was enacted solely out of intense political fear, as the ruling party realized that the electorate of Tamil Nadu would decisively defeat AIADMK candidates in direct elections. He remarked that altering election rules on the eve of polls demonstrates total moral panic within the ruling establishment.

Stalin pointed out that indirect elections deliberately encourage horse-trading, financial corruption, and horse-trading among elected councilors, completely undermining the democratic mandate of urban citizens. By taking away the direct voting rights of citizens to elect their city mayors, the government struck a severe blow against urban democratic empowerment. Stalin emphasized that such unprincipled maneuvers cannot shield an unpopular regime from the accumulated anger of the electorate.

Stalin resolved that the DMK, along with its alliance partners and the overwhelming support of the people, will decisively capture local bodies across Tamil Nadu. He affirmed that the opposition coalition will dismantle the corrupt ruling party's grip on local governance.
