Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound disappointment and anxiety over developments in Sri Lanka following the assumption of power by the Rajapaksa brothers, noting that initial executive actions had already begun hurting Tamil sentiments and eroding community dignity. Stalin observed that the return of majoritarian political forces to Colombo's presidency has revived deep insecurity among Tamil populations in northern and eastern provinces. He stressed that international diplomacy must actively prevent the further erosion of minority civil liberties.

Stalin made an earnest appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to utilize bilateral diplomatic engagements with newly elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to firmly advocate for the rights of Eelam Tamils. The Union Government must emphasize the full implementation of the 13th Amendment, genuine devolution of land and police powers to provincial councils, and the release of confiscated civilian lands. India must hold the Colombo administration accountable for ensuring equal citizenship and human rights.

Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK remains irrevocably committed to the safety, political dignity, and constitutional equality of Sri Lankan Tamils. He pledged that the party will continue urging central authorities to champion Tamil rights across global forums.
