Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and the State Finance Minister immediately release a comprehensive white paper detailing the exact monetary losses incurred by Tamil Nadu and the accumulated pending compensation dues owed by the Union Government under the Goods and Services Tax regime. Stalin cautioned that maintaining passive silence on this vital fiscal issue would inflict serious financial distress on the state and compromise ongoing public welfare programs.

Stalin pointed out that when the GST framework was enacted, the central government legally committed to fully compensating states for revenue losses during the initial transition period. However, the Union administration began withholding statutory compensation citing inadequate revenue collections. By failing to forcefully assert Tamil Nadu's constitutional entitlements at the GST Council, the AIADMK government surrendered the state's fiscal autonomy and crippled development spending across key welfare departments.

Stalin warned that state inaction in the face of central fiscal default will worsen public debt and starve crucial infrastructure projects of funds. He affirmed that the DMK will vigorously champion cooperative federalism and demand full disbursement of all statutory dues owed to Tamil Nadu.
