DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a comprehensive statement explaining the fundamental reasons behind the party's unyielding opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill enacted by the Union Government. Stalin stated that the contentious legislation deliberately strips away the constitutional entitlements of minority communities while destroying the hopes of displaced Sri Lankan Tamils who have endured prolonged suffering in refugee camps. He described the legislation as an insidious trap that undermines the egalitarian foundations of Indian democracy.
Stalin elaborated that Indian citizenship has historically rested on territorial birthplace and secular constitutional equality, strictly independent of individual religious faith. Introducing sectarian criteria into nationality statutes directly subverts the vision of the founding fathers of the republic. Disregarding Tamil refugees who fled horrific ethnic violence in Sri Lanka exposes the central government's callous indifference toward the Tamil diaspora. The DMK cannot remain passive while fundamental human rights and regional sentiments are disregarded.
Stalin called upon the people of Tamil Nadu to unite against the discriminatory legislative assault. He reaffirmed that the DMK will continue to mobilize public awareness and spearhead non-violent mass protests until full constitutional fairness and refugee protections are restored.
