DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the Union Government's decision to withdraw the interest subvention on agricultural short-term crop loans, which resulted in interest rates escalating sharply to eleven percent for agrarian borrowers. Stalin emphasized that while authorities must take legitimate steps to prevent fraudulent loan claims, penalizing genuine, hardworking cultivators represents a severe injustice. He urged the central government to immediately restore the crucial loan subsidy and roll back the steep interest rate hike to protect vulnerable rural households.
Stalin pointed out that farmers across Tamil Nadu and the country are already struggling under prolonged monsoon uncertainties, erratic market price realizations, and escalating input expenses. Eliminating interest subsidies places an unbearable financial burden on small and marginal agriculturists, pushing them deeper into distress borrowing and debt cycles. Instead of supporting rural food producers during an economic downturn, central policy decisions have undermined agricultural sustainability.
Stalin called upon both the Union Ministry and the state administration to safeguard farmer welfare through comprehensive credit support and institutional protections. He reaffirmed that the DMK will continue to advocate for agrarian rights, fair pricing, and accessible cooperative credit facilities.
