Disappointed and concerned to hear that Srilankan Government has decided to only sing National Anthem in Sinhala for their Independence Day.
Such majoritarianism will only further exclude Tamils in Srilanka.
I urge @PMOIndia and @DrSJaishankar to intervene immediately.
DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound disappointment and grave concern regarding reports that the Sri Lankan government decided to sing the national anthem exclusively in Sinhala during upcoming Independence Day celebrations, abandoning the Tamil translation. Stalin observed that dropping the Tamil anthem reverses hard-won reconciliation measures adopted in previous years to foster national inclusivity after decades of devastating civil conflict. He warned that such regressive majoritarian decisions systematically alienate and marginalize the Tamil minority, eroding trust and destroying prospects for durable ethnic peace on the island.
Stalin emphasized that linguistic equality, regional autonomy, and cultural dignity represent essential prerequisites for authentic democratic nationhood in multi-ethnic societies. Denying state recognition to the Tamil language during solemn national occasions signals dangerous majoritarian hegemony that threatens the fundamental rights and constitutional equality of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to intervene diplomatically with the Sri Lankan leadership without delay. He called upon the Union Government to exert diplomatic pressure to safeguard the linguistic entitlements, civil rights, and political dignity of Sri Lankan Tamils.
