DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK administration for lodging police cases against independent journalists who visited refugee rehabilitation camps to gather public opinion from Sri Lankan Tamils regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act. Stalin pointed out that the ruling party committed historical betrayal against Eelam Tamils by voting in favor of the discriminatory central statute in the Rajya Sabha, thereby intentionally excluding war-displaced refugees from acquiring Indian citizenship. Instead of rectifying its betrayal, the government deployed police power to silence investigative journalists documenting camp realities.
Stalin criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for exhibiting extreme political subservience, acting more loyal than the king to please his political patrons in New Delhi. Intimidating media professionals attempting to report on the plight of stateless Tamil refugees constitutes a direct attack on freedom of the press and civil liberties.
Stalin demanded the immediate withdrawal of all police complaints filed against mediapersons exercising their constitutional right to report public affairs. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently fight for granting permanent citizenship rights and dignified living conditions to Sri Lankan Tamil refugees across the state.
