Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the AIADMK administration for attempting to force school students to attend educational institutions on the harvest festival of Pongal to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broadcast. Stalin noted that when the DMK announced state-wide democratic protests against this insensitive directive, the government scrambled to issue evasive denials and hastily rescheduled the broadcast to January 20. He pointed out that official circulars issued by school education authorities clearly demanded that school headmasters ensure student attendance on the traditional festive holiday.

Stalin observed that attempting to curtail traditional festival holidays to flatter central political masters demonstrates the state government's absolute subservience to New Delhi. Pongal is Tamil Nadu's primary agrarian and cultural festival, celebrated with families across farming villages, and attempting to disrupt family celebrations for political theatrics reveals bureaucratic arrogance. He sarcastically warned the Chief Minister not to alter the date of Pongal itself merely to please the Prime Minister.

Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will persistently defend the cultural traditions of Tamil society and protect school children and dedicated teachers from politicized administrative impositions and arbitrary holiday cancellations.
