DMK president and Leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin formally submitted a letter to the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, giving notice to move a private member resolution demanding that the Union Government revoke the Citizenship Amendment Act and abandon all steps toward compiling the National Population Register and National Register of Citizens. Stalin asserted that state legislatures have a constitutional obligation to register collective dissent when federal enactments threaten social cohesion, religious harmony, and fundamental rights.
Stalin stressed that the amended citizenship legislation undermines secularism by introducing discriminatory religious criteria for citizenship eligibility, while entirely ignoring oppressed Sri Lankan Tamil refugees residing in state rehabilitation camps for decades. He urged Speaker P. Dhanapal and Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to allocate immediate legislative time during the assembly session to debate and adopt the resolution unanimously.
Stalin declared that following the historic legislative precedent established by neighboring Kerala, the Tamil Nadu Assembly must take a resolute, united stand defending composite national identity and federal rights. He affirmed that the DMK will aggressively champion the private member resolution within the house to reflect genuine public sentiment.
