DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the arrest of investigative journalist V. Anbazhagan and the abrupt cancellation of the 'Makkal Seithi Maiyam' exhibition stall at the 43rd Chennai Book Fair. The state police initiated punitive action against the stall operator after books exposing alleged corruption scandals involving the AIADMK administration were placed on public display. Stalin characterized the police raid and revocation of the stall's license as a flagrant assault on freedom of expression, literary liberty, and investigative journalism in Tamil Nadu.
Stalin asserted that a literary exhibition represents an open marketplace of ideas where authors and publishers possess the constitutional right to disseminate critical analysis without fear of executive retribution. Suppressing books through administrative intimidation and police coercion mirrors authoritarian censorship. He pointed out that the ruling party resorted to draconian police measures solely because documented allegations exposed financial improprieties within state departments.
Stalin demanded the immediate and unconditional release of journalist Anbazhagan, along with the prompt restoration of his exhibition stall permit at the book fair. He affirmed that democratic dissent cannot be extinguished through state repression, warning that such high-handed actions will only intensify public scrutiny.
