DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government formally apprise the Supreme Court regarding Governor Banwarilal Purohit's prolonged inaction on the state cabinet's unanimous resolution recommending the release of the seven Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts. Stalin pointed out that despite more than sixteen months having passed since the state cabinet passed the resolution under Article 161 of the Constitution, the Governor continued to keep the recommendation pending without justification. He urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to meet the Governor personally and secure immediate gubernatorial assent.
Stalin observed that the convicts—including Perarivalan, Nalini, and Murugan—had already spent nearly three decades in prison, enduring severe physical, psychological, and judicial hardships. He emphasized that the Supreme Court had explicitly clarified that the Governor is bound by the aid and advice of the state cabinet under Article 161. The Governor's indefinite sitting on a cabinet resolution undermines the dignity of the state executive, violates constitutional propriety, and inflicts cruel delays on elderly prisoners and their families.
Stalin insisted that the state administration file a comprehensive affidavit in the Supreme Court detailing the Governor's inaction. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently fight for humanitarian justice and prisoner rights.
