DMK president M.K. Stalin issued an impassioned call to farmers, political parties, youth, and civil society organizations to participate in massive public demonstrations on January 28 across five Cauvery delta districts. Stalin framed the agitation around a crucial civilizational choice: whether Tamil Nadu will prioritize sustainable food grain production or permit hazardous hydrocarbon and coal-bed methane extraction to turn its fertile granary into an arid desert. He declared that the collective roar of Tamil farmers must shake the complacency of the state secretariat and echo loudly in New Delhi.
Stalin criticized the AIADMK administration for acting like helpless puppets while the central government unilaterally granted exploratory hydrocarbon licenses across fertile agricultural belts without state consent or environmental clearances. Disrupting agricultural ecosystems, contaminating subterranean water aquifers, and endangering food security for industrial corporate profits represents an unpardonable ecological crime against future generations. He asserted that the fertile delta, nurtured by centuries of agricultural tradition, must remain an inviolable agricultural zone.
Stalin urged everyone to cast aside partisan divisions and stand united on the streets on January 28. He affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly resist hydrocarbon drilling until every destructive project is permanently cancelled.
