DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union Budget 2020, declaring that instead of bringing economic advancement to India, it brought bitter disappointment to millions of ordinary citizens. Stalin observed that the budget completely disregarded middle-class taxpayers, leaving them financially vulnerable amidst rising inflation and job insecurity. He also denounced the central government's discriminatory stepmotherly treatment toward state governments, pointing out that fiscal federalism has been grievously damaged by inadequate statutory devolution and delayed tax compensations.
Stalin highlighted that states bear the primary responsibility for executing public health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure projects, yet the Union budget curtailed vital state transfers and central scheme allocations. Tamil Nadu, in particular, was severely shortchanged in major infrastructure funding, flood relief assistance, and railway modernization grants. He criticized the ruling AIADMK government for remaining completely submissive, failing to fight for the legitimate financial rights and project allocations due to the state.
Stalin stressed that true national progress is unattainable when the Union government concentrates financial resources in New Delhi while starving constituent states of revenue. He demanded fair revenue sharing and decentralized fiscal empowerment. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion state rights against fiscal centralization.
