Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded condemnation against the Sri Lankan government's decision to drop the Tamil version of the national anthem during its official Independence Day celebrations. Stalin described the deliberate exclusion of Tamil as a direct insult to Tamil-speaking citizens and an ominous regression in the struggle for ethnic reconciliation. He questioned whether the Union government extended diplomatic hospitality and substantial financial credit lines to Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa only to witness the systematic marginalization of Tamil linguistic identity.

Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to instruct the Ministry of External Affairs to summon the Sri Lankan High Commissioner immediately and register India's formal diplomatic protest. He emphasized that singing the national anthem in both Sinhala and Tamil had represented a hard-won symbolic step toward national inclusivity and ethnic harmony following decades of devastating civil conflict. Discarding the Tamil anthem reinforces feelings of alienation and second-class citizenship among Eelam Tamils.

Stalin demanded that India utilize its diplomatic influence to ensure equal language rights, dignified devolution, and constitutional equality for Tamils in Sri Lanka. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion the rights and linguistic honor of Tamils worldwide.
