Editorial context

DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin delivered a scathing critique of Tamil Nadu's financial health following the presentation of the state budget, pointing out the alarming accumulation of public debt under AIADMK rule. Stalin highlighted that while Tamil Nadu's cumulative debt stood at one lakh crore rupees when the DMK demitted office in 2011 after 65 years of post-independence governance, the AIADMK administration tripled that burden to 4.6 lakh crore rupees in just ten years.

Stalin emphasized that this unprecedented debt surge translates to an individual debt liability of nearly 57,000 rupees for every citizen of Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that despite borrowing hundreds of thousands of crores, the state had no transformative infrastructure projects, industrial revival schemes, or substantial public assets to show for the expenditures. Stalin stated that administrative inefficiency and fiscal mismanagement had severely crippled Tamil Nadu's economic competitiveness.

Stalin called upon the government to publish a white paper detailing its borrowing patterns, debt servicing obligations, and revenue expenditures. He emphasized that pushing the state toward fiscal bankruptcy places a perilous burden on future generations. Stalin concluded that disciplined fiscal governance and economic restructuring are urgently needed to restore Tamil Nadu's financial viability.
