Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a fierce condemnation of the brutal police crackdown on peaceful citizens protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act at Old Washermanpet in Chennai . Stalin characterized the violent lathi-charge—which resulted in severe injuries to women, elders, and young demonstrators—as a 'black night' orchestrated by the AIADMK administration's law enforcement machinery. He declared that resorting to baton charges against peaceful democratic demonstrators exposed the government's complete intolerance of civil liberties.

Stalin stated that the ruling regime failed to protect democratic norms and instead deployed state power to suppress citizens exercising their fundamental right to peaceful assembly. Rather than sending senior ministers to engage in dialogue and address legitimate public fears, the state government unleashed police violence, triggering widespread tension across Chennai and other districts. Stalin commended the demonstrators for their patience and resilience in the face of unprovoked administrative aggression.

Stalin demanded immediate disciplinary action against the police officials responsible for ordering and carrying out the assault, along with the immediate withdrawal of false criminal cases registered against protesters. He warned that authoritarian measures will only strengthen public determination. Stalin concluded that his party stands solidly with all peaceful citizens defending constitutional democracy.
