DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin raised two critical issues inside the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, urging the state government to demonstrate genuine administrative resolve. First, Stalin demanded that to truly make the Cauvery delta a 'Protected Agricultural Zone', the government must introduce a robust bill that retroactively cancels all existing hydrocarbon, coal-bed methane, and petrochemical projects. He warned that leaving operational exploration untouched while declaring protection is an exercise in public deception that leaves fertile farmland vulnerable.
Second, Stalin questioned the Chief Minister's inaction regarding the release of the seven Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts who had spent nearly three decades in prison. He pointed out that despite the Supreme Court confirming that the state government and Governor possess constitutional authority under Article 161 to order their release, the state administration had failed to compel the Governor to act on the cabinet recommendation passed in 2018.
Stalin urged the state administration to stand firm on both agricultural preservation and constitutional autonomy. He called on the government to stop deferring to central preferences and start championing the authentic interests of the Tamil people. Stalin concluded that resolute legislative action is essential to protect agrarian resources and democratic governance.
