DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu government in the Legislative Assembly for summarily rejecting the opposition's demand to refer the Cauvery Delta Protected Agricultural Zone Development Bill to a select committee. Stalin described the legislation as an incomplete, superficial measure that fails to provide comprehensive protection to the state's fertile agricultural bowl. He highlighted that the bill deliberately omits vital delta districts including Tiruchirappalli, Karur, and Ariyalur, while leaving existing hydrocarbon and coal-bed methane projects completely untouched.

Stalin argued that exempting operational exploration projects and industrial petrochemical enclaves from statutory prohibitions renders the protected zone designation toothless. Delta farmers who spearheaded continuous agitations against toxic methane extraction were deceived by an eyewash legislation designed for political optics. He stressed that a robust law must retroactively cancel all destructive fossil fuel exploration licenses and encompass every district nurtured by the Cauvery river irrigation system.

Stalin accused the ruling administration of institutional deceit, declaring that half-hearted measures will never deceive vigilant farmers. He demanded that the legislation be redrafted with farmer input and technical rigor. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will champion comprehensive legal protections for the Cauvery delta, safeguarding agricultural soil and water resources.
