DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly objected to Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit's decision to appoint Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar as the convenor of the search committee for selecting the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras. Stalin contended that bypassing established university statutes, conventions, and state academic leadership infringes upon state educational autonomy. He questioned whether this unilateral administrative appointment represented an attempt to introduce partisan ideological agendas into Tamil Nadu's higher education system.
The University of Madras represents one of India's oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning, historically guided by progressive academic leadership. Stalin pointed out that appointing an external administrator with a controversial administrative record in Delhi undermines institutional trust and sidelines distinguished academicians within Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that universities must preserve intellectual independence, merit-based governance, and freedom from centralized ideological interference.
Stalin demanded that the Chancellor reconsider the contentious nomination and constitute a search panel comprising eminent scholars who understand Tamil Nadu's progressive educational heritage. He urged the state government to resist encroachments upon university autonomy. Stalin reaffirmed that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will defend the democratic character and academic excellence of state universities against ideological intrusion.
