DMK president M.K. Stalin contested Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami's claim that micro, small, and medium enterprises had not shuttered operations, pointing out that numerous commercial establishments across Chennai and Tamil Nadu had already suspended trade. Stalin highlighted the precarious situation of thousands of private sector employees, retail workers, and contract laborers who face sudden wage deductions or unilateral job terminations. He demanded that the state government actively intervene to enforce Prime Minister Narendra Modi's advisory regarding mandatory wage protection during the crisis.
Stalin stressed that ordinary wage earners cannot shoulder the economic burdens of sudden commercial lockdowns. When retail businesses and manufacturing units close, vulnerable clerical staff, sales assistants, and assembly workers face immediate financial ruin and eviction. He argued that the state labor department must issue binding notifications preventing private employers from withholding wages, docking leave balances, or retrenching staff.
Stalin urged the state administration to monitor commercial compliance across industrial belts while simultaneously providing institutional support to struggling business owners. He reiterated that protecting workers' paychecks forms the foundation of domestic financial stability. Stalin called upon the Chief Minister to act decisively, ensuring that working families do not suffer income loss during mandatory health closures.
