DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin addressed the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, warning that the state was conducting far fewer coronavirus diagnostic tests compared to neighboring states. He warned that low testing numbers create a dangerous, misleading sense of security while viral transmission spreads undetected through communities. Stalin urged the state administration to abandon complacency, scale up testing protocols, and adopt aggressive disease detection to stop local outbreaks.
Beyond diagnostic tests, Stalin highlighted glaring infrastructure deficits across government medical college hospitals and district health centers. He demanded an immediate increase in dedicated intensive care unit beds and called for the emergency procurement of mechanical ventilators, diagnostic reagents, and certified personal protective equipment. Stalin emphasized that frontline physicians, nurses, sanitation personnel, and paramedical staff require complete protective gear to treat infected patients without endangering their own lives.
Stalin stated that effective preventive medicine demands upfront capital investment and transparent public health disclosures. He called on the Health Department to remove bureaucratic hurdles and fast-track medical purchases directly from reliable manufacturers. Stalin stressed that strengthening hospital capacity and laboratory readiness represents the primary defense against catastrophic public health emergencies.
