Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed serious dismay over the unprecedented demonstration staged by trainee doctors and postgraduate medical students at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai, who protested against the acute absence of basic amenities, personal protective equipment, and infection control measures. Stalin pointedly asked how a state government incapable of protecting its own frontline doctors and medical personnel could ever be trusted to safeguard the lives of millions of ordinary citizens during a worsening global pandemic.

Stalin described the administrative breakdown within the state health department as an alarming institutional paralysis, comparing the failure of departmental leadership to an obstructed trachea requiring immediate intervention. Young resident doctors working continuously in fever clinics and COVID wards were compelled to expose themselves to perilous viral transmission without certified N95 masks, full protective coveralls, or decent resting quarters. Rather than addressing genuine clinical representations, the administration attempted to downplay their grievances.

Stalin urged the Chief Minister to intervene personally, ensure the immediate dispatch of high-quality protective kits to all government teaching hospitals, and streamline clinical operations. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend the workplace safety and dignity of Tamil Nadu's healthcare workforce.
