Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the grave fiscal injustice inflicted upon Tamil Nadu in the interim recommendations of the Fifteenth Finance Commission, which drastically reduced the state's share of central tax devolution. Stalin pointed out that while Tamil Nadu consistently stands as one of the largest contributors to the national exchequer through robust industrialization, efficient tax compliance, and progressive social development, it is being penalized by regressive devolution criteria that reward underperformance.

Stalin emphasized that slashing Tamil Nadu's revenue share cripples the state's capacity to finance vital welfare schemes, expand public healthcare infrastructure, and combat catastrophic disasters such as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. He censured the ruling AIADMK government for its cowardly silence and total surrender of state financial autonomy to the Union government, noting that administrative subservience had cost Tamil Nadu tens of thousands of crores in statutory revenues.

Stalin demanded that the Union government immediately rectify the discriminatory devolution formulas and guarantee equitable fiscal transfers commensurate with Tamil Nadu's substantial contributions. He affirmed that the DMK will spearhead a united political fight to protect constitutional federalism and reclaim the state's legitimate economic entitlements.
