DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the arrest of Andrew Sam Raja Pandian, publisher of the Coimbatore-based online news portal SimpliCity, by the Tamil Nadu police. The arrest followed the portal's publication of news reports highlighting serious deficiencies in government healthcare facilities and food supply shortages faced by healthcare workers, based on representations made by DMK legislator N. Karthik. Stalin characterized the police action as an authoritarian assault on constitutional freedom of expression.
Stalin observed that instead of addressing verified governance lapses and rectifying healthcare deficiencies pointed out by public representatives and independent journalists, the AIADMK administration chose to muzzle the press through intimidation and arbitrary detentions. An accountable government in a democratic society must welcome investigative scrutiny and utilize constructive media reports to improve public service delivery, especially during catastrophic public health crises.
Stalin demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Andrew Sam Raja Pandian and the withdrawal of all fabricated police cases against media personnel. He affirmed that the DMK will steadfastly defend the constitutional rights of journalists and resist all state attempts to suppress democratic accountability across Tamil Nadu.
