Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin interacted via video conference with representatives of the global Tamil diaspora stranded in various overseas countries during the coronavirus pandemic, listening to their grave concerns regarding job losses, expired residence visas, and restricted medical facilities abroad. Stalin emphasized that hundreds of thousands of non-resident Tamils, particularly blue-collar laborers, domestic workers, and young students across the Gulf region and Southeast Asia, were eager to return home to their families amidst mounting uncertainty.

Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to shed its passive posture, immediately establish an official online registration portal, and liaise aggressively with the Union Ministry of External Affairs and civil aviation authorities to operate chartered repatriation flights. He stressed that leaving overseas Tamils stranded in foreign jurisdictions without institutional assistance violates the state's moral and constitutional responsibilities toward its diaspora citizens.

Stalin demanded that state authorities prepare robust logistical arrangements, including comprehensive thermal screening, testing centers, and subsidized quarantine facilities to receive returning expatriates safely without stigma. He affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly champion the safety, dignity, and welfare of overseas Tamils during international emergencies.
