DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union government for subordinating the autonomous Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, reducing an independent statutory regulatory body into a bureaucratic subordinate. Stalin warned that unless the Union government rescinds this arbitrary order and restores the full autonomy of the CWMA immediately, the DMK will spearhead massive democratic protests across Tamil Nadu to defend state riparian rights.
Stalin observed that after the ruling AIADMK repeatedly compromised Tamil Nadu's historic water entitlements through unprincipled political compromises, the Union government seized the opportunity during the lockdown to execute a major blow against state rights. Stripping the CWMA of its autonomous decision-making power directly imperils the livelihood of millions of delta farmers who depend entirely on timely and equitable water releases from the Cauvery basin.
Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister immediately register strong opposition with the Union administration instead of displaying passive compliance. He affirmed that the DMK will never permit the dilution of Tamil Nadu's hard-won legal victories and will resolutely protect the agrarian interests of the state's farming community.
