DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded the immediate dismissal of Information Technology Minister R.B. Udhayakumar after the Union government intervened to halt the contentious tender process for the multi-crore BharatNet optical fiber broadband project in Tamil Nadu. Stalin stated that the central intervention vindicated the DMK's persistent allegations of rampant corruption, tender manipulation, and restrictive bid conditions designed to favor specific private contractors at exorbitant costs to the public exchequer.
Stalin highlighted that the BharatNet initiative was envisioned to provide high-speed digital connectivity to thousands of village panchayats, bridging the rural digital divide and facilitating vital telemedicine, education, and administrative services. However, under the AIADMK administration, the transformative digital project was reduced to a vehicle for illicit kickbacks and crony favoritism. Altering procurement clauses to eliminate fair competition exposed the systemic administrative malpractice permeating departmental operations.
Stalin urged the Governor of Tamil Nadu to order the registration of a formal criminal case and initiate an independent investigation into the tender manipulations. He affirmed that public digital infrastructure investments must be executed with absolute transparency, competitive fairness, and uncompromising public accountability throughout the state.
