DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the AIADMK government for imposing steep tax increases on petrol and diesel during the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, demanding an immediate rollback of the levy hikes. Stalin questioned the moral justification of increasing fuel duties when ordinary citizens were already reeling under severe wage cuts, job losses, and economic paralysis caused by the health emergency. He described the fiscal measure as an insensitive burden inflicted upon distress-hit households.
Stalin emphasized that inflating fuel tariffs during a lockdown inevitably drives up transportation costs for agricultural produce, milk, vegetables, and essential commodities, triggering widespread price inflation across retail markets. Rather than providing financial succor to low-income families and unorganized workers, the state government compounded their economic misery to replenish state coffers. He noted that international crude petroleum prices had crashed globally, making fuel price increases in Tamil Nadu particularly unjustified.
Stalin urged the Chief Minister to immediately revoke the arbitrary fuel tax increase to protect consumer purchasing power and contain commodity prices. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently resist regressive taxation that penalizes common citizens during unprecedented economic crises.
