DMK president M.K. Stalin took proactive initiative to facilitate the repatriation of thousands of Tamil workers stranded in Maharashtra during the coronavirus lockdown, holding high-level consultations with Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office and Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on behalf of the DMK. Stalin stated that both Maharashtra authorities and the Railway Ministry expressed complete willingness to operate specialized passenger trains to transport distressed Tamil laborers back to their home districts safely.
Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to shed administrative inertia, grant prompt statutory clearance, and establish necessary quarantine facilities to receive the returning workers without further delay. He pointed out that thousands of daily-wage laborers, hospitality staff, and construction workers were enduring acute destitution, lack of food, and mental anguish in distant industrial cities while awaiting transit approvals. Prolonged governmental delay in granting transit permissions directly exacerbates their humanitarian suffering.
Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government appoint senior nodal coordinators to manage interstate logistics smoothly and cover transit expenditures for poor workers. He reaffirmed that safeguarding the welfare of Tamil citizens, wherever they reside, remains the foremost duty of leadership.
