DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the AIADMK government for deciding to reopen TASMAC state-run liquor retail outlets, pointing out that citizens were eagerly expecting significant disaster relief announcements rather than liquor commercialization. Stalin stated that it is deeply unfair and socially irresponsible for the state administration to offset its fiscal deficits by extracting revenues from struggling working-class families during an unprecedented pandemic lockdown.
Stalin highlighted that ordinary households were enduring severe financial distress, depleted savings, and acute livelihood losses due to prolonged movement restrictions. Instead of providing comprehensive monetary support, subsidized provisions, and debt relief, the state administration chose to revive alcohol sales, which threatens household stability and escalates domestic violence. He noted that opening retail vends amidst rising infection numbers would inevitably cause massive queues, destroying physical distancing precautions.
Stalin urged the state government to immediately revoke the order reopening liquor shops and prioritize genuine public welfare over commercial excise revenues. He demanded that authorities explore constructive fiscal solutions and pressure the Union government for statutory GST compensation rather than burdening impoverished citizens. Stalin emphasized that genuine leadership protects the vulnerable during crises rather than compounding their miseries through regressive commercial measures.
