Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin called upon the people of Tamil Nadu and political allies to wear black badges on May 7, staging a united statewide protest against the AIADMK administration's abrupt decision to reopen TASMAC liquor shops. Stalin criticized the ruling establishment for demonstrating callous negligence toward community safety, pointing out that authorities failed to create adequate public health awareness, ensure essential medical precautions, or deliver comprehensive economic relief to families impoverished by the ongoing lockdown.

Stalin observed that instead of dedicating administrative energy toward pandemic containment, testing expansion, and citizen rehabilitation, the state government displayed singular enthusiasm for reviving alcohol retail revenues. He warned that opening liquor outlets during a sharp escalation in contagion would inevitably trigger unmanageable crowding, endangering lives and nullifying social distancing protocols across urban centers and rural villages alike.

Stalin appealed to party cadres, alliance partners, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens to wear black badges at their homes and workplaces to register deep indignation. He demanded that the state administration rescind its dangerous liquor sales decision immediately and concentrate all institutional resources on safeguarding human lives and strengthening healthcare facilities throughout Tamil Nadu. Stalin affirmed that public welfare must always supersede commercial administrative priorities.
