Pained and anguished to hear about the Aurangabad train accident.
On behalf of DMK, I express my condolences for the loss of lives.
I urge the Union and State governments to work together to help inter-state migrants reach their homes safely under the present circumstances.
DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound anguish over the tragic train accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, where sixteen exhausted migrant workers walking along railway tracks toward their home villages were killed. Offering heartfelt condolences on behalf of the DMK to the bereaved families, Stalin characterized the catastrophe as an agonizing reflection of the acute humanitarian desperation experienced by displaced labourers stranded across India during the nationwide lockdown.
Stalin emphasized that the catastrophe highlights severe systemic gaps in disaster management, social protection, and intergovernmental coordination during the health emergency. Deprived of wages, shelter, and basic nourishment due to abrupt travel restrictions, thousands of desperate workers undertook arduous journeys on foot across hundreds of miles under perilous conditions. He underscored that authorities cannot remain indifferent to the acute distress suffered by vulnerable migrant laborers.
Stalin urged the Union and provincial governments to establish immediate coordination mechanisms to ensure safe, organized, and dignified transportation for stranded migrant workers. He demanded adequate financial compensation for the victim families and prompt administrative support to transport survivors safely to their native destinations. Stalin reiterated that humanitarian protection must remain the highest priority of governance during crises.
