DMK president M.K. Stalin urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to immediately issue an official notification for opening the sluice gates of Mettur Dam on its customary date of June 12, citing abundant water storage levels available for the Kuruvai paddy cultivation season. Stalin noted that adequate reservoir storage presented an invaluable opportunity for delta cultivators to achieve agricultural productivity, provided the administration executed preparatory measures efficiently without delay.
Stalin emphasized that releasing irrigation water alone is insufficient to guarantee agrarian success. To protect farmers from economic distress caused by the lockdown, the state agriculture department must ensure uninterrupted distribution of certified seeds, quality fertilizers, and subsidized inputs, alongside expanding cooperative agricultural credit without procedural bottlenecks across rural branches.
In addition, Stalin insisted that the state administration must distribute free personal protective gear, face masks, and sanitization equipment to all agricultural laborers working in fields during the health emergency. He urged the government to act proactively, eliminate bureaucratic delays, and implement an all-encompassing agricultural support package to secure food security and safeguard the welfare of delta farming communities throughout the season.
