DMK president M.K. Stalin severely criticized the Tamil Nadu government for displaying gross administrative negligence by issuing desilting orders barely eighteen days prior to the scheduled opening of Mettur Dam on June 12 for Kuruvai cultivation. Stalin questioned how irrigation authorities could possibly clear sediment across thousands of kilometers of riverbeds, arterial canals, and drainage channels within such an impossibly brief timeframe, warning that hasty, cosmetic dredging would prevent water from reaching parched tail-end farms.
Stalin emphasized that the Cauvery delta agriculturalists depend entirely on timely water delivery to initiate seasonal paddy cultivation. Leaving desilting until the last moment creates fertile ground for contractor corruption while depriving delta farmers of vital irrigation security. An administration that operates through reactive declarations rather than methodical planning severely endangers agrarian productivity across the entire delta region of Tamil Nadu.
Stalin demanded that the state administration immediately induct genuine farmers' representatives into local monitoring committees to supervise desilting operations transparently. He urged authorities to mobilize heavy earthmoving equipment on a war footing, ensure unhindered water flow to tail-end areas, and protect cultivators from irrigation deprivation throughout the upcoming season.
