DMK president M.K. Stalin called for a comprehensive restructuring and re-evaluation of the Tamil Nadu state budget for the fiscal year 2020-21, emphasizing that preceding economic projections had been completely invalidated by the coronavirus crisis. Stalin pointed out that even before the pandemic struck, the AIADMK administration had driven Tamil Nadu into an alarming fiscal crisis, accumulating unprecedented public debt exceeding 4.56 lakh crore rupees alongside staggering revenue deficits.
Stalin explained that the lockdown severely curtailed state revenues while dramatically escalating public healthcare and humanitarian relief expenditures. In this drastically altered economic landscape, adhering to outdated budgetary estimates and rigid sectoral allocations formulated before the contagion reflects fiscal incompetence and administrative detachment from current economic realities facing citizens across the state.
Stalin urged the state government to convene a special session of the legislative assembly or consult top economic experts to draft a revised fiscal roadmap. He stressed that the administration must reallocate capital outlays toward emergency healthcare capacity, agricultural revitalization, and direct financial cash transfers for vulnerable households, ensuring that state resources directly mitigate public suffering rather than servicing wasteful administrative expenses.
