DMK president M.K. Stalin voiced strong indignation over exorbitant electricity consumption bills issued by the state power distribution utility TANGEDCO, which caused severe public outrage among residential consumers and micro-enterprises across Tamil Nadu. Stalin described the arbitrary billing calculations during the lockdown period as an organized financial extraction inflicted upon families already reeling from unprecedented economic distress, income losses, and joblessness.
Stalin pointed out that due to bi-monthly slab calculation anomalies during the suspension of physical meter readings, domestic consumers were abruptly slapped with astronomical bills multiplying their regular tariff payments. Instead of extending compassionate administrative relief during an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, the state administration forced struggling working-class households to bear punitive energy costs under the threat of immediate disconnection.
Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government immediately intervene to rectify predatory assessment methods and treat preceding lockdown billing cycles as dedicated disaster relief. He urged authorities to waive outstanding residential electricity charges and provide substantial tariff concessions for at least six upcoming months. Stalin affirmed that responsive public utilities must support vulnerable citizens during health emergencies rather than penalizing domestic consumers.
