DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Chennai police for registering a criminal case against prominent television news presenter Varadharajan after he published a video describing alarming coronavirus conditions in Chennai hospitals. Stalin remarked that when citizens and experienced media personalities articulate firsthand experiences regarding bed shortages and medical delays, an elected government should investigate administrative shortcomings rather than harassing the messenger. Threatening individuals with punitive prosecution simply because they urge caution during a catastrophic pandemic demoralizes the public and prevents vital ground feedback from reaching senior policy decision-makers. Stalin demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami immediately drop all criminal charges filed against Varadharajan and instruct police authorities to cease harassing citizens who report public grievances.
