DMK president M.K. Stalin raised urgent concerns regarding the plight of 350 Tamil workers who traveled to Kuwait for short-term employment and remained stranded abroad for over three months due to pandemic travel restrictions. Stalin pointed out that while the employing company had agreed to sponsor their return flights and fulfill repatriation requirements, the Tamil Nadu government had inexplicably delayed granting official clearance for landing.
Stalin criticized the state administration for bureaucratic apathy, emphasizing that leaving expatriate workers stranded in foreign lands without regular wages, basic sustenance, or medical support is unconscionable. Migrant workers constitute a vital pillar of the state's economic prosperity through hard-earned remittances, and abandoning them during a global public health emergency violates fundamental governmental duty. When corporate sponsors are prepared to charter repatriation flights, governmental inaction constitutes an intolerable obstacle to citizens in distress.
Stalin urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to intervene promptly, grant immediate administrative clearances, and facilitate the safe arrival and institutional quarantine of the stranded workers. He reiterated that the state government must prioritize diaspora welfare, establishing dedicated consular helplines and proactive repatriation protocols.
