DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami's administration for displaying callous indifference toward working-class families struggling under pandemic lockdowns. Stalin reminded the government that the DMK had repeatedly demanded a direct cash transfer of five thousand rupees for every ration cardholder, alongside substantial concessions on domestic electricity tariffs, yet the administration stubbornly refused to extend any meaningful financial assistance to distressed households.
Instead of providing economic relief, Stalin noted that the government permitted continuous hikes in petrol and diesel prices while enforcing inflated electricity bills on citizens without even granting reasonable time for payment. He questioned whether the Chief Minister possessed any compassion for poor and middle-class families who lost their livelihoods, exhausted their savings, and faced severe economic distress during months of lockdown restrictions. Refusing direct assistance while compounding household financial burdens demonstrates an astonishing lack of governance empathy.
Stalin urged the state government to immediately roll back excessive electricity charges, provide relief on utilities, and distribute direct financial aid. He stressed that protecting citizens from economic ruin is a fundamental governmental duty during catastrophic health emergencies.
