Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin challenged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami over his public claim that trader Jayaraj died of natural illness while his son Bennix died of breathing difficulties in judicial custody. Stalin pointed out that the Chief Minister issued these definitive medical assertions even before doctors had submitted formal postmortem examination reports, exposing a blatant effort to protect accused police personnel and mislead the public.

Stalin questioned the factual and legal basis upon which the head of the state administration could offer excuses for custodial deaths that bore undeniable evidence of severe physical torture. By pre-judging the medical findings, the Chief Minister effectively signaled to investigating authorities that the state government preferred attributing the fatalities to preexisting health complications rather than acknowledging brutal police violence. Such conduct severely compromises investigative integrity and undermines the basic principle of executive impartiality during grave criminal inquiries.

Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister clarify who provided him with unverified claims to justify custodial violence. He insisted that the government stop defending institutional misconduct, respect upcoming forensic findings, and prosecute every police officer involved in the Sathankulam killings without political interference.
