DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the significant judicial directive issued by the Madras High Court instructing the Union government to formulate compassionate, actionable plans to repatriate thousands of non-resident Tamils stranded across various foreign countries. The judicial intervention came in response to a public interest petition moved by the DMK, highlighting the acute distress of expatriate laborers, domestic workers, and students who lost their jobs, visas, and accommodations abroad due to international pandemic shutdowns.
Stalin asserted that citizens stranded in foreign lands without financial resources or medical access represent an urgent humanitarian responsibility of the Indian state. He emphasized that forcing impoverished migrant workers to pay exorbitant commercial airfares for repatriation flights was deeply unjust and exploitative. Stalin demanded that both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments bear all travel expenses and quarantine costs for returning diaspora members who had contributed immensely to the regional economy through foreign remittances.
Stalin criticized the AIADMK state administration for its continuous apathy toward non-resident Tamils, urging Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to coordinate actively with central authorities to arrange dedicated repatriation flights without delay.
