DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu government decision to restrict the distribution of free rice and essential grocery commodities to family ration cardholders solely for the month of July, describing it as an insensitive act that ignores the severe hardships of low-income citizens. Stalin pointed out that while the Union government had issued explicit guidelines extending free food grain distribution under public welfare programs until November to mitigate lockdown distress, the AIADMK administration arbitrarily limited state distribution to a single month.
Stalin questioned why Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who routinely implements central directives without hesitation, chose to ignore central welfare norms specifically when it came to feeding impoverished households. He highlighted that daily wage workers, informal laborers, auto drivers, and rural families had exhausted their savings and continued to struggle without regular employment, making sustained food grain support vital to prevent widespread hunger and malnutrition across the state.
Stalin urged the state government to immediately reverse its restricted order and announce the supply of free rice, pulses, and cooking oil to all ration cardholders until November. He affirmed that ensuring universal food security during humanitarian crises is an undeniable administrative duty.
