DMK president M.K. Stalin paid glowing tribute to social revolutionary Thanthai Periyar, recalling the profound magnanimity, intellectual courage, and selfless humanism that defined the leader of the Self-Respect Movement. Stalin recounted memorable historic anecdotes demonstrating Periyar exceptional grace, noting that when detractors hurled footwear at him, he remarked with equanimity that a commemorative statue stood at that very location. In addition, when opponents attempted to burn his portrait, Periyar printed and provided copies, and handed his own pen to critics writing hostile questions.
Stalin stressed that Periyar dedicated his entire life to dismantling caste oppression, eradicating superstition, and championing women liberation, laboring tirelessly even for the upliftment of those who opposed him. This towering ethical stature, Stalin remarked, is why he is revered as Periyar, a leader of unmatched greatness whose rationalist philosophy awakened the social conscience of Tamil society.
Stalin emphasized that the ideals of human dignity, social equality, and rational thought propounded by Periyar remain the bedrock of the Dravidian movement. He affirmed that reactionary forces seeking to denigrate Periyar legacy will never succeed in erasing his monumental contributions to societal emancipation across Tamil Nadu.
