DMK president M.K. Stalin led a statewide black flag demonstration from his residence, protesting against the AIADMK administration for levying exorbitant electricity charges on domestic consumers during the coronavirus lockdown. Displaying black flags alongside party leaders and raising slogans against unjust billing practices, Stalin pointed out that while citizens faced severe loss of livelihood and income disruption, the state power distribution utility issued inflated, arbitrary electricity bills that imposed severe financial strain on ordinary working-class families.
Stalin criticized the state government for resorting to misleading explanations and procedural excuses instead of addressing genuine public grievances regarding tariff calculation errors. He emphasized that widespread public protests across the state reflected deep popular outrage at the callousness of the administration. Stalin urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to show basic human compassion by waving excess energy tariffs, allowing bi-monthly slab concessions, and permitting flexible installment payments for vulnerable consumers.
Stalin reiterated that public utilities must support citizens during unprecedented crises rather than burdening them with unjust financial extraction. He affirmed that the DMK would continue to mobilize public resistance until fair tariff relief is provided to every affected household.
