DMK president M.K. Stalin raised serious concerns regarding the credibility of official statements after the state government admitted to undercounting 444 coronavirus fatalities in Chennai alone. Stalin observed that if the municipal administration in the state capital could obscure hundreds of deaths from official tallies, it is highly probable that thousands of fatalities across other regional districts have similarly gone unrecorded during the ongoing contagion.
Stalin questioned how citizens could place faith in government bulletins, medical directives, or infection projections following such blatant data suppression. He pointed out that concealing mortality statistics does not reduce the severity of the pandemic, but rather blinds public health experts and local administrations to actual transmission intensity. By projecting misleadingly low death numbers, the government risked encouraging complacency among the public while failing to allocate sufficient oxygen supplies, ICU beds, and medical personnel to distressed rural and urban centers.
Stalin demanded an independent verification of hospital registries, cremation grounds, and burial grounds across all districts. He emphasized that transparent epidemiological accounting remains essential to protect vulnerable populations and craft effective containment strategies across Tamil Nadu.
