DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union government for hastily publishing the draft Environment Impact Assessment Notification 2020 during an unprecedented global pandemic. Stalin pointed out that the proposed regulatory framework dilutes existing environmental safeguards by granting post-facto clearances to polluting industrial projects and exempting major commercial enterprises from mandatory public consultations, stripping local communities of their fundamental right to express ecological concerns.
Stalin characterized the draft notification as an unprincipled concession designed to roll out a red carpet for corporate conglomerates at the expense of delicate ecosystems, agricultural lands, and coastal habitats. By curtailing public hearings and severely weakening compliance monitoring mechanisms, the policy endangers natural biodiversity and threatens the livelihoods of farming and fishing populations across Tamil Nadu. Rushing such contentious legislation through during pandemic restrictions reflects complete contempt for democratic deliberation.
Demanding that the Union government immediately scrap the draft notification, Stalin urged environmental activists, farmers, and civic organizations to voice fierce opposition. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently oppose regressive ecological policies, defending sustainable development, environmental justice, and local community rights against corporate plunder.
