DMK president M.K. Stalin issued an unequivocal condemnation of the prolonged and unlawful detention of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and other regional political leaders. Stalin pointed out that nearly one full year had elapsed since prominent Kashmiri elected representatives were placed under indefinite custodial restraint, marking a grave suppression of democratic voices and constitutional liberties across the valley.

Stalin criticized the Union government for misusing draconian preventive detention laws, including the Public Safety Act, to criminalize political dissent and silence elected opposition representatives. He maintained that locking up former chief ministers, legislators, and civic activists without trial strikes at the foundational ethos of Indian parliamentary democracy. Converting an entire state into an administrative detention camp sets a dangerous authoritarian precedent that threatens civil liberties and federal relationships throughout the country.

Reiterating the DMK's consistent defence of democratic freedoms and human rights, Stalin demanded the immediate release of Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and all arbitrarily detained political prisoners. He insisted that the Centre restore civil liberties, reinstate democratic processes, and engage in genuine political dialogue with the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
