Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to halt the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, warning that its unilateral provisions threaten to dismantle decades of inclusive educational progress achieved in Tamil Nadu. Stalin highlighted that the Dravidian movement has historically prioritized accessible, affordable, and equitable schooling for all sections of society, enabling underprivileged communities to enter higher education and global careers.

Stalin cautioned that the new national policy introduces excessive centralization, commercialized exit examinations, and covert linguistic impositions that erode state legislative competence and undermine Tamil linguistic identity. By prescribing early vocational streaming and centralized board assessments, the policy erects institutional hurdles that will push rural, first-generation, and backward-class learners out of formal schooling. Education is an essential concurrent subject that requires meaningful consultation with state governments, educators, and regional stakeholders.

Calling for an immediate freeze on the policy's adoption, Stalin stressed that policies affecting millions of students must never be imposed without extensive parliamentary debate. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently oppose regressive educational directives, championing federal autonomy, vernacular instruction, and universal educational empowerment for all aspiring youths across Tamil Nadu.
